Following my recent post: Blogging Platform – Have You Convincingly Made The Right Choice?, I have received a few questions about the difference between WordPress.org and WordPress.com.
If you’re one of those people who are on the fence about which WordPress software to go for, you are not alone. Many new bloggers find it hard to make a choice and they are usually attracted to WordPress.com because it’s free.
So, I will lay it out for you right here with the help of wpbeginner and you’ll decide…

I would also like to add the following points about WordPress.com:
1. It is as easy as 123 to have a WordPress.com blog – you just sign up and create a blog in seconds.
2. WordPress.com blogs get some love from Google.
Cons:
1. It’s not your hosting account and it comes with a limited space.
2. You have limited widgets to use.
3. Not ideal for business niches.
4. They can get deleted without a warning.
Can you live with a feeling of having something that can vanish any time?
Enter the WordPress.org world!…
1. You can install the WordPress.org on your own domain name without diluting it with some prefix or suffix.
2. It’s easy to install the WordPress blogging platform – you can take advantage of the popular “5 minute install” or if your hosting provider has the Fantastico script library on your cPanel, then you can have your new blog up in literally 3 mouse clicks! There are many free WordPress themes to choose from. All what you would need to do is to customise it to your liking
So, can you now see the benefits of hosted blogs?
If you’re looking to run a successful business blog, then there is no easier and functional blogging platform than WordPress.org. Period.

Hosting right now is really cheap, i see no reason to give yourself headaches with their host and limitations. You can even get free hosting from some providers if you don’t have $5 or don’t consider it’s worth to pay for something like this.
But i admit, if all you want a website for is writing some thoughts every 2-3 days and are not interested in traffic or money, there’s no point in dismissing wordpress.com.

Mavis,
This is a great post, you lay out the pros and cons perfectly in the chart. Anyone who wants to have an online business and build their brand really must go with wordpress.org – there’s no other option!

Hi Mavis,
First time I’ve seen a side by side comparison for the two WordPress Blog options like this.
Really nice. I love comparisons, and I believe it makes for enjoyable informative reading.
Especially when unbiased pros and cons are given for both sides of the coin. Awesome skills of a true reporter.
Well, I have my favorite choice though: Wordpress.ORG! – because I love graphic customization that I can do on my own.
But I guess the rule of value applies here as well – you get what you pay for. Free vs. Cost.

Hey Mavis,
Very good post you have here and good table you’ve created. Some people have no idea that there is a difference between the two platforms. Let alone the difference between Blogger and Wordpress. Thanks for making it clear for us.
I’m with you, self hosted wordpress blog is the way to go if you’re trying to grow your own business and brand!

That’s interesting, Ankur.
sometimes I do not understand why this debate between self hosted wordpress and free wordpress is still on? It is an open and shut case. Wordpress.org is better than wordpress.org 100 times out of 10.
P.S.- the table looks terrific mavis

In my opinion, anyone serious about making any sort of money through their website will use the .org solution, and either purchase a premium themeforest template, or have the wordpress theme professionally designed.
You’re right, Joseph.
I recommend the.org solution to everyone, even hobbyists. The reason being that the investment for hosting is very small and the added functionality of a wordpress install is totally worth it… the plugins alone are worth the install!
Plus, a lot of hobbyists end up wanting to step their blog up, and if you’ve aready been building a presence on wordpress.com, the transition can be a bit shaky
