Want to know how I placed 2nd in the Top 50 MLM Blogs Contest 2011…
….and shared the spotlight with the industry leader, Ray Higdon?
Read on!
By the way, I did enter the same contest last year and achieved the 19th position.
So, how did I do it this time, given the fact that I was a later comer?
Simply put, I used the same strategies that I used to promote my Traffic Generation Blogging Contest post back in March this year.
Here’s how it performed:
1. Comments: 528
2. Facebook shares: 913
3. Retweets: 354
4. Stumbles: 343
5. Linkedin shares: 153
Well, see for yourself:
I placed 4th. I should have been in the top 3 in all fairness, but there you go.
So, as you can see, if I had more time and applied all the strategies that helped me to make my contest post go viral, I would have won the Top 50 MLM Blogs Contest!
What are the exact strategies that give me lots of comments, votes and shares?
Last year I didn’t even make the top 10 because I didn’t know how to promote my entry. Things changed when I learned from someone who had won 3 out 4 contests that she had entered previously.
That’s none other than the amazing Kristi Hines, blogging enthusiast and social media expert over at Kikolani.com.
When it comes to contests, guest or pillar posts, I use the exact strategies taught by Kristi in her powerful ebook called Blog Post Promotion – The Ultimate Guide (affiliate link).*
The amazing results I shared with you above and my 2nd position in the Top 50 MLM Blogs Contest 2011 show that Kristi definitely knows what she is talking about.
Here’s what you need to do if you want to win or do well in contests:
1. Ask For Help
See, you can’t win contests without getting some help. You just can’t!
You need to ask for help. And, that’s one of the things that Kristi teaches in her guide.
It’s all about embracing the power of networking – building great relationships and making good friendships along the way.
So, I ask my blog readers, followers, subscribers, fellow marketers and bloggers, friends and fellow members in the groups and communities that I belong to.
Most of them do help. Some of them want a favour in return, and I happily oblige (within reason of course). Some do not respond at all and that’s okay.
Think about it… If you have friends with the same interests and goals, they would be happy to help you, if you ask them, right? Just be kind enough to return the favour when they need your help, it’s a two-way street.
“Ask and you shall receive”. It works
2. Help Other Contestants
You need to help others if you want them to help you too. It’s the simple law of reciprocity. If you vote for your fellow contestants they will most likely return a favour.
That’s exactly what I do, supporting the contest and the other contestants. It’s a great thing to do. Even if they don’t return a favour, you’ll feel good knowing that you have helped others.
Out of the 137 entries in the Top 50 MLM Blogs Contest, I reviewed and voted for about 130. I shared some blogging tips (pointers) to help others improve their blogs.
I guess it’s because I love doing blog audits.
I have received great feedback from a lot of people who appreciated how I have pointed them in the right direction.
Now, not everyone returned a favour and I’m cool with that. When you help others, you will receive ten-fold.
3. Offer a Bribe
Relax, it’s nothing illegal. It’s an ethical bribe, in the form of a free ebook, report, e-course, webinar, anything you fancy really. People are likely to take action if there’s some incentive for them. Help them help you!
I didn’t use this strategy in my previous contests.
So, just 3 days before the voting cut-off date, myself and other great bloggers in our industry decided to host a private Q&A Blogging Webinar to give everyone who has voted for us something of value in return.
And, a few contestants were also offering something of value in exchange of votes. Marketing experts use bonuses all the time to sweeten their deals
Key Takeaway
There you have it. If you want to rock the contests and get your name out there, just like I do, then I highly recommend that you get yourself a copy of Blog Post Promotion – The Ultimate Guide.
Only $37 $25 USD for a limited time!
If you want to learn about how to promote your blog posts, guest posts and contest entries heavily for amazing results, then this is a must-read guide, without a hint of a doubt.
Many Thanks From the Bottom of my Heart!
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone once again for your continued support. I couldn’t have achieved this without all your help.
I would also like to thank George Fourie for organising this amazing contest. I truly admire George for the hard work and a lot of time he put in preparing for the contest and counting the votes for the final results – inspirational! He needs some good sleep now
So, what do you think?

Hi Mavis,
Congrats on your massive success.
Your tips are stunningly simple yet absurdly powerful. Ask for help. Tap into your massive network. Most will help you. Honest to goodness Mavis, I would have put your stuff out there as always but I had such a poor internet connection in Ubud, Bali that I sometimes had only 15 minutes a day online. But I know you have such a powerful network that you would come through without my tweets
Seriously though, ask for help then give help. RT. Facebook Share. Leave nice comments. Give freely, and you receive generously, meaning others will do the same social sharing and commenting on your post, helping you expand your presence.
As for the bribe, it’s good money every time. Offering value-packed freebies coaxes folks to help you out. You need to be a self-promoter, and of course, you need to be willing to promote others too.
Thanks for sharing your tidbits of wisdom Mavis.

I do not think there is anything bad in asking for help. For a contest, a vote from the loyal readers would be of great help and wont take much of the time

Congrats on winning 2nd place. By the activity you described, it shows that one of the most important elements that helped you reach the top is commitment. As you marked your goal for next year, with your dedication, I’m sure you’ll conquer the 1st place.
Thanks very much, Assaf. I’m sure I will
Hi Mavis,
Congrats on your second place finish. It is obvious that social marketing is the ticket for ranking in google. I’m slowly learning the ropes but I am not the most social person so it is a slow process. I like to work by myself but I am slowly getting used to the social scene and the techniques that you mention are helpful. As soon as I learn this, something else will probably come along so it is like a continuing game.
Thanks,
Jim
Thanks very much, Jim. Yes, it’s an ongoing process
