I have had a number of people ask me if they could republish my recent, popular post: 101 Surefire Ways to Attract Targeted and Endless Prospects.
I do appreciate you wanting to spread the word and help other marketers to build their businesses the smart way.
I have also republished a couple of posts or so from other blogs, (giving credit to the authors, of course) which I thought my readers would benefit from them.
Now, is this a good or a bad strategy?
I stumbled upon a very interesting article by Matt Cutts, regarding copying or republishing other people’s content.
It highlights Google’s changes in their algorithm to make sure that republished content doesn’t rank higher than the original one.
Imagine putting a great deal of time and effort into creating your best and valuable content and then get out-ranked by someone who republished it, (giving you credit ) or someone who just stole it. Not fair, is it?
So, this change is really good and long overdue. Here it is in a nutshell:
“We’re evaluating multiple changes that should help drive spam levels even lower, including one change that primarily affects sites that copy others’ content and sites with low levels of original content. The net effect is that searchers are more likely to see the sites that wrote the original content rather than a site that scraped or copied the original site’s content.”
So, those who are scraping other people’s content, will have Google to deal with and they will never succeed.
Now, how should you share your favourite posts from other blogs with your readers? Well, you can do exactly what I have done with this post.
Instead of copying Matt Cutts’ post, I did a little introduction and linked back to his blog post – so you can head over there to read the whole story. I have also quoted some of his words, to create curiosity.
So, if you’d like to share this post: : 101 Surefire Ways to Attract Targeted and Endless Prospects with your readers, you can follow the same strategy
It would be great if you could use “attraction marketing” as anchor text. Thank you in advance.
By the way, this goes for every piece of content. Google is more interested in original and unique content.

Mavis,
This is an interesting post for me especially since I’ve considered attempting to repost content from something I thought was great in the past but since I’m still a bit “green” to this whole blogging community and the etiquette that goes with it I did not take action. Thanks to you I see how this could be done.
Thanks for the insight,
Roger

This settles it for me. You are one of the classiest women on the internet. =) This was such an elegant way to say what you need, get your point across, and be gracious to those who are totally dying to republish our fabulous content.

This is a great point and goes straight to the heart of blogging. Sure there are other bloggers that create incredible content. And of course you want to share that with your readers. But you have to remember that they are YOUR readers and are also interested in what YOU have to say about it.
Valuable information should always be shared. But you can always put your own twist on it.

Hi Mavis,
That’s really GREAT news! I have seen copies of my posts on other people’s blogs. And while they were kind enough to link back to my original post I was wondering how this would affect Google ranking. Now I know, thanks to you and your great article above.
I always find excellent content here. Keep up the great work!

Mavis,
I also heard google had recently changed their algorithms. I personally write my articles from scratch, so I wouldn’t know how it feels to have my article republished and outranked by someone else, but I’m sure it would really suck.
Let’s hope these new google updates will encourage new and unique content. Great post!

Hey Adrian,
I know, it would really hurt. Thankfully, Google is doing something about it – they are all about original and unique content .

Mavis,
This is so very well put! I think that the best way to ‘repost’ another’s great content is to give props to it and then a link – just as you did!
Thanks!

Hi Mavis,
I read Matt’s post and it’s refreshing to know that Google is taking steps to prevent others from copying your content and then have it rank better than your original.
I’ve had that happen to me several times, frustrating
Great post Mavis, thanks for the heads up on this.

Great post, Mavis! I tend to try to make original posts as much as I can, or try to break things into a series if I know that I have ideas that I know I can’t finish in one post less than 1000 words. I think that it is a good idea for Google to put the emphasis on original posts.
Keep up the good work!

Google is intelligent,it saves each and every activity that is performed on each site of the globe. When one article is indexed by one author,it looses the value for second publication.
We can’t outsmart Google. It’s important to be safe than sorry.
That would be funny if someone copied your hard earned work and ranked higher than you. But in actuality that wouldn’t be funny. After a while you can only write things in so many different ways till it starts sounding like someone else’s. Pretty much its just regurgitated information. but the difference is that it came from YOU.
I was thinking about this myself Mavis. There are some great post that I read and I don’t want anyone getting the wrong idea thinking that I was trying to take credit for their work. But what I did one time was put a little bit of there work in my blog, to strike curiosity like you did and placed a link to their blog. If they wanted to take the time to really read it. Thanks for sharing.

It happens a lot more often then people think Stephen. Many bloggers have taken to getting other sites shut down because of it.

Hi Mavis Nong,
Your suggestion about republishing any online content is appreciable. I hardly publish any copied content, I always try to write something unique. But your idea is good enough to copy only one or two first paragraphs. But some website totally based on this idea, I think it is not good.
Bloggers Community should make a code of conduct to avoid duplicate content everywhere.

Hey Mavis
I have not yet republished someone else’s content but your 101 post definitely would be a good one to start with.
I like the way you shared Cutts content, in fact you added value to it rather than just posting 100% of his content like scarping sites do.

Hi Mavis!
I know I shouldn’t be sensitive, but I hate it when someone wants to republish my content. I would so much rather them share what they loved most about it, what value it gave them, what their results of implementing my tip/technique were or something like that, and link to my post instead of scraping it to publish on their blog.
Glad to know Google’s doing something about that!
Oh, and I have a post started in draft form that links to your awesome pillar content post. I will be sure to double check the anchor link to make sure it’s attraction marketing, but I believe that’s what I did!
Thanks Mavis!

Hi Mavis,
Great to hear that Google has this in hand as far as ranking goes and love how you helped people to understand how to re-publish content in a unique way.
Sharing other people’s content is a compliment to them if it id done with respect and consideration.

Hi Mavis,
well done. If people do it like you, it’s even an honour for the author of the original content. They get credit in words and a backlink, and their thoughts are appreciated by the prospective of another person.

I don’t really agree with reposting/republishing others posts even though you give them credit. I’d rather write that I found something interesting on this or that website and I recommend it to others by attaching a link. But I learned something from this post: Google tries to make a difference between original posts and copies of them.

Forgive this newbie for intruding on an aging post but I found this page after searching for Google’s take on republishing content. I understand that Google is going to give credit to the origin of the content but HOW will they determine who’s came first?
Is a Wordpress post different to a webpage that only get’s crawled every so often? If someone takes my post minutes after I publish it to my own blog only to repost on theirs, how do the powers that be know which is the original?
Welcome to my blog, Naomi!
Most of the times, Google is good at discerning which came first, often because any republished posts will have a link back to the original.
In those instances when the content is simply stolen and there are no links back and you notice it ranking for anything at all, you can easily report it to Google and the page will be de-indexed.
Of course, it’s possible that Google is not as perfect as it would like to be and can rank another site that republished your post ahead of yours.
Nothing can be done in this case, just hope that those who visit it will follow the links back to you.
Hope this helps, Naomi.
All the best,
Mavis
Not at all, Naomi…
