One of the effective ways to get your blog indexed faster and your content found on the search engines is pinging content – I mean each and every piece you create.
Hang on… What’s pinging?
You probably know what pinging content means, however I’ve discovered that most bloggers don’t know much about this strategy and the trouble that comes with it.
So, I have decided to write about this today.
Pinging content is a very important step if you are serious about grabbing the top positions on the search engines with your content.
It’s an easy way used to let the search engines know that you have published something new on your blog so that they can check it out.
I also recommend pinging your new articles, press releases, podcasts and so on. It’s all about sending an electronic signal to the different search engines, notifying them that you have new stuff that they need to see and send traffic to.
P.I.N.G. stands for “Packet Inter Network Groper”.
Now, if you have a WordPress blog, this process gets done for you automatically. I bet you didn’t even know that. This is really good as we’re all busy and we love automated stuff, right?
Newsflash: your blog has probably been banned by the pinging services as we speak, without you knowing about it - ouch!
Pinging Content – WordPress is Getting You into Trouble
I love WordPress and I recommend it to my readers and clients. However, it has some flaws here and there, like most things do. One of the flaws is related to pinging content.
By default WordPress pings whenever you post a new post in your blog. That’s fine and that’s what we want.
But the problem is, WordPress also pings whenever you edit and update any existing post.
So, if you edit a post 10 times then WordPress will send 10 pings. It doesn’t matter how small or big a change you make, WordPress always pings whenever you edit.
And, you don’t want that, because if you edit your blog a lot then your blog will be banned from pinging services because of excessive pinging.
Pinging Content – How to Check if Your Blog Has Been Banned
The only way is to check each and every update service about twelve hours after you post, and see if they have received a recent ping for your blog, or if they are displaying the current post(s) from your blog.
Another way is to search for your post titles and see if they come up in search engine results.
The good news is that most bans don’t last very long, however you need to prevent this in the first place.
Pinging Content – How to Solve the WordPress Pinging System?
The good news is that, there is a solution to this problem so that your blog doesn’t get banned by the pinging services for spamming the search engines.
Enter MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer! This plugin corrects the WordPress’s pinging system and will save your blog from getting into trouble.
Here’s how it works after installation:
- When you create a new post, your blog will ping and notify all the ping services that it has been updated.
- When you edit an existing post, it won’t send an unnecessary ping to ping services and will save your blog from getting banned.
- When you post a future post by editing the time stamp, it will ping only when your post appears in future.
As you can see from above, you are absolutely safe from getting banned when you use the MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer plugin.
Here’s what you need to do to be able to use this plugin:
1. Download the zip file to your computer.
2. In your admin area, go to Plugins and upload this plugin from your computer.
3. The setup requires one time free registration. Enter your name and email address.

5. Go back to your blog, verify and activate the plugin.
6. Add a list of sites you want your blog to ping to.

Mavis,
Really great stuff here. I always kind of knew about pinging but never really looked into it as a traffic generation thing.
I’ve downloaded the MaxBlogPress Plugin and now I’m going to pay closer attention.
If you’ll blocked from a Ping site can you ever get unblocked?
