Today, many bloggers use the “NoFollow” code without even realising it. But what on earth is this NoFollow code? It’s all about hoarding the link-love. Here’s what I mean…
Since search engines take a look at the websites that link back to your website, when determining what your ranking should be, most established sites are not in favour of linking to up and coming sites in fear of hurting their Google ranking. So, using the NoFollow code stops the search engines from evaluating your site based on those sites linking to it – this is not ideal if you are still trying to get established and recognised.
Here are 13 reasons why NoFollow code sucks.

Hello again Mavis…coming to visit you again. I hope you are doing great. Yes I will agree with your post in here, but let me ask you this. Have you ever notice that sometimes Search Engines somehow follow the nofollow links. I have found is that search engines sometimes follow the nofollow links and as a result search engines are spidering my sites and indexing them. Regarding hurting SEO Ranks, I don’t think so it will happen. By the way I joined your training. I am always eager to learn from anyone…

Hi Luis! Great to see you back
You’re right, Google always looks for a variety of links and NoFollow links are a part of that.
Glad to hear you have joined my training
See you soon!
All the best,
Mavis
Great post, we need more people like you!
@Luis Posselt, I’m quite sure that Google doesn’t give a juice for nofollow links, there are likely other search engines that do give some juice for nofollow’s though.
@Mavis Nong, you make a good point, I’d be interested to here what the people at Google have to say but your likely right. It makes sense that all dofollow links could potentially raise some flags with Google.

No worries, Mark
I know that a lot of the bloggers are using no-follow because it is the way that wordpress is initially setup, and without downloading plugins to make them DO-follow the comments will stay blocked by search engines like google.
The thing is Drupal out of the box is DoFollow when it comes to comments, and they get more love from the big G in my opinion.

Hey Mavis,
Thanks for the post. Yes, indeed the nofollow
tag is a pain and we got to “thank” the spammers
for making the nofollow tag to exist.

Thomas

Well I think if you are using nofollow to stop spammers ,you are stopping real commenter as well.

Hi Mavis,
I agree with you. Dofollow should be the way to go.. If we are trying to stop spammers, we can always use other plugins like akismet and captcha to stop them.

Hi Edmund! Welcome to my blog!
That’s true. Here’s the plugin that kept the spam comments at bay: http://www.attractionmarketingonline.com/blog-plagued-spam-comments/. I ditched Akismet and never looked back. I hate Captchas
Thanks for the visit and comment.

Hi Mavis,
Nice article on your website and an excellent contribution by Loren. I really liked the word you used “Link Love”. The world would be a happier place if more people around the world believed in creating a win-win situation (stopped using No Follow Tags). What you guys said mad a lot of sense. Thanks for sharing the info.
You’re welcome.
I am a proud advocate of the Do-follow revolution and forever will!
That’s good to hear, Raymund.
I guess a lot of people use the no follow tag in order to prevent spammers, but I have found that rarely stops them

I am a little confused with the nofollow concept in links. Is it implemented or assigned manually for each comment by the website’s administrator? Or is it a chosen set limit for all incoming comments by clicking on a checkbox inside the wordpress panel? Anyway, it’s good to know that people are becoming aware of the benefits all of us are free to get.

Probably the best write up on no follow I’ve come across.
To me, there is certainly more confusion over it than positive benefit or function.
And because things are so ever changing with the search engines, especially Google, its really hard to say “this is the best way” to handle no follow.
Comes down to following the fundamentals of good content creation and link building and hopefully we are on the side of benefit more than on the side of penalty.
Viva do follow
Thanks very much, Bill. Agreed – do follow is the way to go.
Welcome to my blog!

Thought the ‘If you want to spread your Google juice, why use a link-condom?’ was hilarious! Thanks for sharing and I do agree that there needs to be a more effective way of stopping spam rather than the no follow concept. They’re still spamming everywhere!!
Jordan
I agree – very funny! Welcome to my blog, Jordan!

Dofollow, way to go most definitely. Great blog.
Absolutely, Bill. Welcome to my blog!
“No-follow is a poor search engine’s solution to conceal its own failure to rank websites appropriately. What’s next, No-linking?”
This made me laugh, seriously. I totally agree.
Very funny I know.
Wow! That’s a lot of reason why NoFollow Code Sucks! But yeah I am fully agreeing! I think using NoFollow code in your blogs is still useless because as far as I know NoFollow does not prevent comment spam. And you are right Akismet and SpamKarma us much more effective. Also I don’t like the idea of search engines cutting up the web into sections and blocking paths between sites. I think people use the whole no follow idea without knowing about it.
It does happen for people not knowing they’re using nofollow.
Hi Mavis,
I have been going and forth on whether to add NoFollow tags to my comment section, as many of the big bloggers use NoFollow, so I appreciate your helping to clear up this issue, and I read today that WP designates Nofollow anyway as the default setting.
Thanks for helping to clear up the issue for me.
Ken
It’s my pleasure, Ken.
“Thought the ‘If you want to spread your Google juice, why use a link-condom?’ was hilarious! Thanks for sharing and I do agree that there needs to be a more effective way of stopping spam rather than the no follow concept. ”
Is link juice even relevant in todays SEO? With the current implementation of Google panda I believe no follow and do follow link will matter anymore. Google will prioritize sites with informative content even if they only have few links linking back to them.
I know, very funny!
… You’re right, quality content rules!
