When it comes to putting together a powerful website or blog, every page is important.
Yet many people seem to overlook the most important pages, and this is a big mistake.
A few days ago, I shared some tips on how to create a converting “Online Business Tools” page that sets you apart.
You can refresh your memory here:
Today, I wanted to talk about another important page, the “About Me” page.
Whilst it’s true that people will naturally get to your home page first, many browsers will want to take a look around your whole website to get a better feel for who you are and what you do.
This is especially true if they are making a buying decision.
I don’t know about you, but for me, this is the second most visited page on my blog, after the Home page. See why it’s important?
I have seen many “About Me” pages that do little to impress or engage visitors. In fact some of them have been so bad they would put me off following that blog.
And, I have shared my frustrations here:
Here is a guide to building an “About Me” page that will present you in a positive light!
1. Keep it Focused
The main reason people will visit your “About Me” page is to find out more about who you are, and why you are the right person to solve their problem. You don’t need to write an autobiography to achieve this.
In a short, sharp, and engaging way you need to give people a little background about yourself, giving them information about your qualifications, and areas of expertise. They will want to know why you are a person they should listen to and buy from.
2. Don’t Lie
Some bloggers make the horrible mistake of elaborating details of their skills and achievements, simply to make their bio page look better. Big mistake! You will get found out, and the internet is a very small place! A bad reputation spreads very fast and is tough to shake!
Forget about “Fake it until you make it!”
3. Make Yourself as Human as Possible
People like to do business with people. It’s a great idea to include your picture on your “About Me” page so that people can get to see you’re a real person.
In many split tests and surveys carried out, people have said they were more likely to engage with a blogger that had a photo of themselves on the site.
It makes you seem more genuine, rather than being a faceless person behind a computer screen. It’s advisable to include your contact details on this page. Include the social media sites and any web messaging services you use, as well as the other means of communication like Skype.
People tend to trust you more if they feel you can be easily reached should they have a problem.
4. Although It’s About You, It’s Not Really!
“What are you talking about?” I hear you cry!
When people visit your “About Me” page, they are really looking for further proof that you are the right person to help them deal with a problem. Your “About page” is a chance to clearly communicate to your audience what you can do for them.
Make sure you write the content for this page with your prospects and customers in mind. It isn’t merely a chance for you to brag about your achievements and how much money you make every month.
5. Don’t Forget a Call to Action
Never leave an “About page” without a call to action. This is a another great chance for you to close your prospects and to ask them to take some sort of immediate action. Whether that is to sign up to your email list, or to buy a product, anything really.
Now you have answered any objections they might have had by reading your copy, and now they’re further convinced that you’re the right person for them, take advantage of that heightened state and ask for action.
If you fail to do so you’re leaving money on the table.
“About Me” Page Key Takeaway
Do not ignore the importance of your “About Me” page. If your visitors are reading it they want more information and proof that you can help them. Succeed where others are failing and give people what they really want! A kick-butt “About page”!

Hi Mavis,
All are excellent tips.
#3 jumps out at me. Be human. Be personable. The more human you are, the more people connect with you. Talk about your interests, your likes, the mistakes you’ve made, and your accomplishments too. We want to connect with the human side of others.
Clearly state how you can help your readers, so they know how you can help them. You can do everything else right, but if you don’t explain how you can help, your business won’t grow.
Pictures. Pictures. Pictures. Did I stress that one enough?
Include a pic of yourself, and some shots of you and your family, or friends. Be real, and your real-ness helps others to connect to you.
Thanks for sharing your keen tips Mavis.

Very true – People either identify and connect with your story or they don’t. Sharing your story of how you got involved in your business, how you worked your butt off and transformed your business and life, will attract people who are where you were before and now want to be where you are. They will be confident that you will be able to help them since you overcame your challenges and became a success story.
I know – I need to add more pictures
Thanks for coming by and for your input, Ryan.
All the best,

Thanks for this timely reminder Mavis – I did mine a while ago and went back to re-read and YES mine definitely needs a few tweaks. I agree with Ryan that people are fascinated by pictures and need to see you and your family if necessary.
My facebook profile gives a brief bio and a suggestion with a link to go back to my “About Me” page on my blog, so this is a VERY important page.

Hi Mavis, I was so stuck when came to creating my About page. Here’s what I ended up doing. Over the last year, some of my blogging friends have said nice things about me on their blogs, so I took my favorite excerpts and added them to my about page, which also gave each one of my friends a nice backlink

It also gives new comers to my blog a chance to see what other people think about me which in some cases might be more important than what I think.

Hi Mavis,
I think the about me page is often overlooked as being a critical part of someones blog. If someone is like me, they may not even know what the heck to right about at first. Like you mention though, this is not a place to “fake it until you make it”.

Hi Mavis,
great post. I agree with you that “Fake it until you make it.” is bad advice – even when nobody finds out, it’s not good for one’s karma
I also agree that it’s about the blog owner but the readers will ask themselves the question:”What’s in it for me ?” e.g.to work with this person etc.
Thanks for sharing your insights.
Take care

Hey Mavis,
Your about me page can build trust and that’s especially important for anyone in the coaching, consulting or training niche.
My about me page is one of my most popular pages.
One of the things I’d suggest avoiding on your about me page is advertising. Have you seen that?
Welcome to my page, I’m here to help you, now buy this…
Ack, tacky!
You’ve listed some great elements to add to an about me page and I’d suggest using all of them, paying special attention to the ‘it’s not about you’ section.
Your reader wants to know about you, of course, but you have to convey to them that who you are, what you’ve done and where you are going is really about what you can do for THEM.
Nice Post Mavis

Mavis Nong invites you to check..What Does Your Online Business Tools Page Say About You?
100% agree on this topic Mavis as I personally do the same as and when I used to visit any site I used to do first click on “About Page” so that I can get whole view of site and site’s author and all the point which you have mentioned are also go in sequence in my mind in order to justify author.
From beginning only I give high importance to this page as this is first step of creating our impression prints on visitors mind.
I like two point very much that “make yourself human as possible” and “Allthough it’s about you, It’s not really”. This are very much effective points in order to win trust and building a genuine relationship.
Thanks a lot for this useful and important informtion which is not to be NEGLECTED.
You’re most welcome, Meg. Hopefully a lot of people will start paying special attention to their “About” page.
Thanks for the visit and input.
All the best,

Hi Mavis,
I like your statement about your About Me page not really being about Me, but your readers. Very true.
One thing I like to do is to let them know not only who we are, but also what they’ll find in our blog that will interest them.
I link to the major categories of the blog, the ones I know will be of interest to most readers. And I also link to some of my other pages, like the Tools and Coaching pages. It’s a great way to interlink your pages for continued reading and helps your readers get to know you and your blog even better.
Thanks for the great post, Mavis!

Interesting, if you were blogging with the aim of getting work would you use it in the same manner as a CV?
Two different things you’re talking about, Danika.
Mavis, aloha. Great advice and tips on the important of the About Me page. While my About Me page does say “what’s in it for them” as well as tell a bit about me, I certainly see where there is plenty of room for improvement.
Ileane’s idea is terrific. After checking out how she did it, I am going to borrow that idea. Nothing like social proof.
Also, while I did not have my contact info on my About Me page, I will certainly add it. One of my “pet peeves,” Mavis, is when the only way I see to contact people with through a contact form–no e-mail or phone number.
As always, I appreciate your great tips. Aloha. Janet

Yes, it is pretty obvious that most writer and bloggers tend to forget the importance of the section ‘about me’. So thanks for pointing out that and for showing some methods that can be used to enhance the effectiveness of our web. Great work is done by you.
