Blog Post Writing – How to Write Content That Grabs Your Reader’s Attention

by Mavis Nong on October 12, 2011

Blog Post Writing How to Write Content That Grabs Your Readers Attention Blog post writing hard for you?

Do you find yourself writing blog posts that fail to attract readers, comments and shares?

It can be very discouraging to produce content day in and day out if it does not get the attention it deserves.

When writing your content, your goal should be to draw people to it like honey to bees.

Here are some 7 cool ways to add some heat to your posts, and grab your readers’ attention:

1.Headline

The headline of your content serves as the door to your world. It should create curiosity and interest and make people want to read your content. If your headline is not compelling and enticing enough, then you are going to lose your readers. So, make your readers curious to find out more by using catchy blog titles.

2.Opening Paragraph

Just imagine how disappointed you’d be after crafting a killer headline for your post, only to lose readers with an opening that failed to carry the momentum.

The second most important part of your blog post after the title is the opening paragraph.

A great headline mixed with a lame opening is like inviting someone into your house, only to slam the door in their face as they approach. Can you imagine that?

So, open your blog posts with a bang – tell your readers what they can expect, give them reasons to read your content, so they keep reading.

3. Formatting

The other thing is to break up your content with sub-headings, bullet points and so on. Always use formatting (bold, italic, underline etc.) to make reading easier.

4. Language

You need to make every sentence and word work for you. Cut out unnecessary words and phrases. Use everyday language. Short, simple words can convey your points far more effectively than grandiose, convoluted ones.

Your subscribers will not be interested in referring to a dictionary every time they read your posts.

5. Internal Linking

You also need to link to your other relevant posts to help your readers visit more of your blog and also help Google find you other related posts and get them ranked as well so you can get more free traffic.

6. Images

Images make posts look colourful, attractive, interesting and even entertaining. Always go for funny or cute pictures. People love them.

Here is a top tip: make your images link to your capture page, fan page or another page or post. Why? Because people like clicking on images. So you could direct them to your money pages or other authority posts.

7. Solve Your Readers’ Problems

Your readers are more interested in posts which solve their problems. Study your niche and get to know your audience so you can know what their common worries and struggles are. You can use these in your posts, by empathising with how they feel and by sharing some solutions.

Blog Post Writing – The Common Trend

Here is the thing… beginner bloggers usually get excited about their brand new, stunning blogs with cool graphics and all that.

Some new bloggers get obsessed with the design and all the nice stuff, not realising that’s not what makes a blog successful.

Being excited with the idea of blogging, they start writing a few posts consistently and them boom! They run out of the steam, hit the wall and then get writer’s block.

Now, even those who have been blogging for a while, go through the same thing every now and then.

They abandon their blogs and make excuses for not coming up with fresh blog post ideas to share with their readers.

A fact is, a blog without content is dead, it will not attract regular visitors, subscribers and customers. No one will take you seriously if you don’t provide content.

Blog Post Writing – What Do You Write About?

Hi Mavis,

Super tips, I dig the one about keeping your language simple.

Short, punchy, directed and focused posts work best. Talk in every day language. Readers want simple to digest, usable content. Stuff they can read quickly, process, and put into use for their own benefit. Wordy, grandiose posts do NOT accomplish this. Leave your ego behind and think about how you can help your readers in the most direct way possible.

As for headlines, they make the post. Interesting and magnetic headlines get plenty of clicks. Boring headlines get few clicks. Your content can be top shelf, but if your headline is whack, nobody reads it, meaning your content provides little benefit for others, even if it’s darn good. Think action. Start titles with action verbs, or how to do something. This lets readers know right off the bat that they need to take action, starting with clicking on your title!

Thanks!

Hello Mavis,

Great post in here! Thanks for sharing your tips how to write content that grabs your reader’s attention. For me the 2 biggest factors really are the headline and opening paragraph just like what you said. And most of all it should solve other people’s problem. By the way thanks for the tip about the “images”. Haven’t tried it yet, so this must be +1 :) Thanks again Mavis.

Hi Mavis,

thanks for sharing your insights. It’s a tragedy that so many blogs fall into oblivion and their Alexa ranking remains in the millions in spite of an ambitious start. I underestimated what it takes to run a successful blog, but when I realized what to do I did it. Let’s face it (we don’t have to like it): Even mediocre content with proper promotion can be successful whereas top content without proper promotion won’t be successful. The best way to run a blog is certainly to marry great content and proper promotion. Well, you are a master at this, are you not ?

Thanks for sharing your insights.

Take care

Hi Mavis,
I agree with all the points you mentioned here, especially the first one – headlines. However, I have encountered blog posts that have interested me to click on and read because of their compelling “killer” headlines, but when I read the content, it does not satisfy me, and there are times that the headline was just a lure to get me to read some old content that I have already read somewhere before.

I agree with you in your point on language. Some folks think by using being pompous or grandiloquent in your writing can grab the attention of the reader. It makes the reading so bored and the reader would not be able to dial in the idea the writer is trying to pass across. You lose Authority in your niche by always doing that.

IMO, the best way to attract more n more visitors to your blog is to write articles on topics which doesn’t exists on Internet and I think this is what Google wants us to write. Providing with such a content that is nowhere on the internet could really boost your blog traffic many times. Secondly, every visitor expects something that could add some value in the knowledge. If blogger can input some unique tips into their articles visitors will definitely appreciate it.

Marvelous tips! I think that at the very beginning of writing any article, much attention should be paid on the headline, because there is a number of people who can even not to read an article further if the headline didn’t evoke their interest or wasn’t eye-catching for them. And in this case you can lose a huge number of readers. And I also agree with you completely about language, it should be simple and easy for reading
