Blogging Tips – Are You Making the Most of Your Blog Footer?

by Mavis Nong on July 22, 2011

Blogging Tips Are You Making the Most of Your Blog Footer?Blog footer – do you really need one for your blog?

Who will be scrolling down to the bottom of your site anyway?

You’d be surprised! I do, I always want to see what’s in the footer area.

Do you have one, by the way? I didn’t and I always wanted to have one.

I put creating a blog footer on hold as I knew that I’ll be changing my theme.

And, as part of my new blog design, I added a footer too.

What is a Blog Footer?

A blog footer can be found at the bottom of the blog’s home page. And you can have it appear at the bottom of all your blog pages if you want to.

It is often said that it’s important to put the most important stuff on your site, above the fold, right?

Think about it this way – your visitors may like your blog and scroll down to see who designed your stuff or what theme you used. Boom! If you have the right stuff down there, they will start reading and clicking on your links.

And, depending on the theme you use, your readers may see the footer when leaving comments.

A footer can be used for a variety of purposes, depending on your personal preferences. You can visit other successful blogs to get some ideas.

Here’s what I’m talking about, to save you from scrolling down:

Blogging Tips Are You Making the Most of Your Blog Footer?

As you can see, I have added a bit of information that I thought my readers would be interested in, without making use of my sidebar.

1. About this Blog

First of all, it’s important to let your visitors know what your blog is about and who is behind the blog. As it would be impossible to write my whole story there, I have added a link to my “About Me” page.

I’m also inviting them to subscribe to my RSS feed so that they can get my post updates delivered to their inbox.

2. Hot Topics

I have added my main categories as I don’t have them in the side bar. I’m making it easier for my visitors to have a bird’s eyeview of my content and to help them find what they might be looking for. They can then pick and choose what they want to read.

3. Recommended Resources

Here are my sharing my top 5 products and tools that I personally use on my blog and in my business. So, if my visitors are interested in getting the same results as I do or even better, they can go ahead and check out what I’m recommending.

4. Other Links

I have the copyright information right below everything else and I have also added the other links: Home, Terms of Use, Privacy and Sitemap.

I have just shared what I have added on my blog footer based on my personal preferences. There are a number of ideas that you can choose from to make your footer appealing to your visitors.

Anticipating the question…

How Do You Create a Blog Footer?

Most WordPress themes come with the widgets built in to the blog footer. Other themes need a bit of customisation. And with the other themes, like my previous one, you’d have to create one.

If you need help, head over to my blog maintenance page.

Blog Footer Key Takeaway

A blog footer can be used as another way to keep your visitors longer on your blog. Now that I have one, I feel it does complete a blog, what do you think?

One thing I would say is, don’t put too many things in your footer, you don’t want to be annoying your visitors, do you?

Play around with your footer area and see what you come up with.

Your Turn:

  • Do you scroll down to the blog footers?
  • Do you have one on your blog?
  • If yes, what information have you added there?
  • What do you think of my footer?

Hi Mavis,

you are right on that a footer is important. I put changing mine on hold as well as I am going to change my theme as well. I would say that you are using your footer area just perfectly. How many really do scroll down or if you’re the exception is another story.

Well done, and thanks for sharing your insights.

Take care

Ditto on observing how top tier bloggers use the footer on their websites! In fact, that’s just what I’m doing here ;-)

The cool thing about the footer is how readers who scroll the way down are often quite engaged in the blog’s content. I think it’s a great place to drop a subscription box!

Hi Mavis,

Super creative use of a footer here.

I like that you started the footer with your About Me. What better way to connect with your readers, than to share your story, and how you can help you readers.

Right now I have an affiliate link but I may switch it up. Thanks for sharing the inspiration.

Well done Mavis!

Hi Mavis!

Thanks for inviting me back to your Blog…from The Blogging
Mastermind Comment Tribe’s page. :)

Since blue is my favorite color, of course I’m lovin’ your new
theme (I liked your past 1 too). I know blue is ‘easy’ on the brain
& states that ‘you’re in friendly surroundings’.

Now that you mentioned it, my footer could stand a little tweaking
at that. I just may use yours as a guideline…I really like it.

I also know that readers are drawn to the PS of a sales letter, so
yes, footers are an important area to definitely pay attention to.

Another excellent article my friend & your Alexa, I’m still drooling!!

Have a highly inspired day…your tribal friend Steven Suchar

I personally scroll down to the footer mainly to see where the blogger got the design. As you said, it’s true that most people don’t scroll down, but i think the few that do are worth the little time you put into it.

Hi Mavis,

Your footer looks wonderful, and you’re right people do notice. I can think of several blogs that have really nice footers offhand. For some reason I had never put much thought into adding one to my blog. I will have to add that to my list of things to do once I get my computer issues resolved! :)

Thanks,

Hi Mavis,

First, I absolutely LOVE your new design. Looks awesome. I’ve thought about adding a footer, but I don’t think my theme is designed for that so I would have to change themes. Which, I wanted to do several times already, but every time I had made up my mind to change it, someone paid me a compliment on it telling me how much they liked it. Arrggg! :)

However, the new blog I’m working on will have a footer and I certainly will take your suggestions to heart there. Thank you so much for putting out such great value on a continuous basis! You ROCK!

This is really interesting Mavis… never thought much about the blog footer before. The reason is that I never thought people would scroll down that far, like you said.

But then I started thinking about my own behavior on blogs. When I see a great site, I absolutely scroll down to the bottom to see what theme they used, etc. Guess I should follow my own lead here and get a good footer in place.

Your post is so timely for me, since I am in the process of redesigning our site.

Thanks, Mavis!

Really great post, made me realize my blog has ZERO footer at the moment. I’ve considered adding one, and this is a great resource of ideas on how to do that, but I actually have decided against it.

A couples reasons:

1. You and I both write long posts. Not to mention after you get a lot of comments, getting to the actual bottom of the page is hard and most viewers don’t ever end up all the way down there. Google Analytics’ new In-Page analytics has confirmed that for my blog and I have a strong suspicion that I’m not the only one.

2. I think that useful information like the “about the blog/author” or hot topics and recommended links, etc are great and could be better utilized on the right or left columns of the blog layout. Obviously this raises the risk of making your blog too cluttered but it might be worth asking “is it worth it?”

Great post though! Curious to hear your thoughts on this.

You are right in this matter that FOOTER plays an important role for our blogs as I personally have habit when I open any blog first I watch it whole and then moves to down side inorder see is there anything which is useful for me or any new which I am not aware.

So I am just working on it as you have shared various wonderful IDEAS for that due to which my works becomes more easy.

And talking about your footer than its perfect as you have put all important thing over there like summary of blog, Hot topics, Recommended Resources. All these three things are very much useful for us and its also look nice as nothing is waste.

Thanks a lot for this post through which you have shared wonderful idea concern to footer and also make us aware that its not to NEGLECT this part of blogs which is very much important.

I really like the design of your footer, Mavis. Especially the “about me” part. Footer can be used in a variety of ways to add additional resources that you would like your readers to check out and links in which you want to direct traffic to in some cases. It all an intelligent use of the available space, I would say.
