Commenting on blogs offer many different benefits such as building inbound links to your blog, interacting with other bloggers, promoting yourself as an authority or expert on a given topic and more. In fact, a blog without comments is useless — harsh but true.
Google is now factoring ACTIVITY more heavily in their rankings. Content and links may get you temporary rankings, but if you want to move up in the rankings faster and stay there longer, then you need to encourage activities which include comments. Read more about this here: Blogging Tips – 3 Primary Steps To Higher Rankings.
Blog commenting is extremely important for bloggers — we always appreciate visits and comments left on our blogs as well as the link love from other bloggers. Therefore, a commenting system plays an important role as well.
Now, which one should you use?
For the purposes of this post, I will be making a comparison between Disqus and CommentLuv. If you have been leaving comments on my blog, you would have noticed that I have been using Disqus, right?
For quite some time now, I have observed that most bloggers use CommentLuv and I wondered why it was so popular. So, I did some research and compared the two systems.
1) You can track the comments that you had made on the other blogs in your profile account.
2) It automatically threads your comments, so you have a flowing discussion.
3) You can rate other commenters, which will move their comments to the top and be seen as an authority.
4) It allows you to share your comments on Twitter and Facebook.
5) You don’t scroll down until the end of the comments to leave your comment.
Downside:
It’s not user-friendly for your first-time commenters to leave comments. The registration process can be a little bit annoying. If you want to attract more blog comments, you want to offer a simple process.
1) It includes the commenters’ last blog post link at the end of their comments when they submit their comments. This gives them great exposure. This is an “incentive” that encourages your readers to leave you comments.
2) It has a great and supportive community. I didn’t experience that with Disqus.
3) As most CommentLuv users have a DoFollow policy on their comment links, commenters may get some link love for their blogs.
4) It gives the option to add KeywordLuv which allows commenters to use their keywords as anchor text when commenting.
5) The first commenter stays at the top.
6) It offers SEO benefits.
So, I was convinced by my findings to switch to CommentLuv. However, I was hesitant, afraid that I will lose all my comments! I didn’t want that to happen as they are very important for my blog.
So, this morning I bit the bullet and successfully installed the CommentLuv plugin and it works fine and I still have my comments! Yippee!
Your turn now – please share your experiences with either commenting system below and let me know how CommentLuv works on my blog

Hey Mavis..
Great post, I’m gonna be honest with you.. even for an experienced blogger like myself – Disqus is still very annoying. For a while I couldn’t figure out how to insert my website link, but I eventually figured it out..
Anyhow, I live commentluv.. it’s easy and it’s pretty cool to my readers too. If you want threaded comments, you can just get the threaded comments plugin and you’re all set.
Thanks for sharing

I know what you mean… I must say, I love CommentLuv and I’m sure my readers are going to find it easier to use.
Thanks for the tip about the threaded comments plugin. I have just found out about adjusting the settings in the Discussion tab in the admin area – cool!

Absolutely, Jen! Good choice

I definitely use CommentLuv (on my new blog) and I have looked at using Disqus. However, Disqus seems quite complicated for most people to use and I would prefer to make it easier for people to comment on my blog.
With that said, great run down of both plug-ins. Thank you for sharing it.

I prefer CommentLuv over Discus. Discus is good too but, as you mentioned, some people will see that they need to register and just won’t bother to make the comment that they otherwise would have.

Such a debate, Mavis!
People love both Disqus and CommentLuv. I’m more on the CommentLuv side of things myself. If only the two would make friends and play nicely together! Then we’d have the benefits of both.
Great post Mavis!

Food for thought Mavis! My blog uses the comment system that is inbuilt in the theme, has dofollow “built-in” & allows threading. It works really great! But…it doesn’t show the commenters last post link like comment luv does.
I suppose I should decide if & how much would change if I switched.
Thanks for the insight,

Hi Mavis,
Like Hector, I find Disqus a bit annoying. I do really love Commentluv though, because not only am I able to give some “link love” to those who visit my blog and leave a comment. But I also get some visitors back from those blogs I leave a comment on myself. So it’s really a “Win/Win” situation.
Have a great week!

Good review, I tried and deactivated Disqus, it is very slick looking, but its a many layered beast and primarily ALL we want is to attract comments, not put up barriers. So I will move on to commentluv for sure. cheers

Hello Mavis
Welcome to the ComLuv community.
Disqus replaces your blog comment system with their own, while CommentLuv works with your blogs default comment system.
What does that mean?
It means that all of your comment settings are adjusted in your Discussion tab in your WordPress Settings.
You can adjust such things as the order of comments and threading.

Hey Mavis, I agree Peter. Most people compare Disqus with Intense Debate when it comes to commenting systems. But the default Wordpress commenting system works just fine once you install CommentLuv. The battle between Disqus and Intense Debate occurs for people using Blogger, which has the most awful default commenting system on the planet. In that case Blogger users will see that Intense Debate wins because you can install the CommentLuv Plugin and reap all the fantastic benefits you listed in your post!

Yes, the default WordPress commenting system works great with CommentLuv. I can’t believe it took me so long to switch, but I’m so pleased with my choice now.
Thanks for the visit and for adding value to this topic.
All the best,
Mavis
Hello Mavis,
I really dislike Disqus, I comment only on one or two blogs that have it. We’ve established a connection so I’ll post on their sites. The others, who use it, I simply read via NetNewsWire without commenting.
Sire of Wassup blog, did a poll about the Disqus commenting system a little while ago, almost half said they would not comment on a Disqus blog. I thought that was interesting. http://wassupblog.com/the-results-are-in-disqus-does-cost-you-comments/
I really like CommentLuv, I’ve been using it for years. Naturally, I had to install it on my newest blog too.
I’m all for rewardingthe people who comment. CommentLuv does that. I use the Twitter addon along with the Top Commenters Plug in too.

Hi Mavis,
I used Comment Luv before I knew about Disqus and when I compared them them there was no way I was giving up my ‘first luv’ – ha ha
One thing that Comment Luv does not do, is notify commenters of a blogger’s response to a comment left.
I like to know what these are but I don’t have time to go back to all the blogs I visit and check.
I make it easy for people who leave comments on my blog by notifying them what my response was via a simple and effective plugin called ‘Comment Reply Notification’.
~Marcus

There is just no time to go back to different blogs to see the author’s responses. I have recently installed Comment Reply Notification plugin as well. It does a personal touch too.
I appreciare your visit and input.
All the best,
Mavis
Hi Mavis,
Oh I’m so glad you switched!
I don’t like Disqus at all! Here in the outback my internet is really slow, and all the blogs with Disqus load super slow.
Most of the time they glitch too, so I have had to refresh several times before finally even getting the comment section to load properly. It is a big time sink for me when I hit Disqus blogs. If I’m not hooked on the blogger, I don’t go back.
The other thing I like better about CommentLuv is, I really like the first commenter to be at the top. I feel that it gives that person the best spot for being quick to comment.
I also like that you have to go all the way to the bottom to leave a comment. It’s annoying if I want to scan through the comments, and then have to go all the way back up to leave my comment. I think having to go all the way to the bottom to comment encourages others to actually read, or skim the other comments as well.
Okay, maybe I have a very strong opinion on this topic! lol
Anyway, great post and I’m so happy you switched!
((hug))

Me too, Susanna!
I can now see that Disqus is definitely not user-friendly. The thing is all the blogs that I visit use CommentLuv or WordPress default commenting system so I haven’t really experienced using Disqus as a commenter as much.
Thank you so much for the hug. I’m sending one to you too ((hug)).
I appreciate your visit and your valuable comment.
All the best,
Mavis
Hey Mavis!
Good choice to move to ComLuv! I always recommend bloggers use ComLuv – you pointed it out when you said that the link back to the commenters site is an “incentive”, that one simple feature is the main benefit I see to using ComLuv. So good choice!
Cheers!
Ian
Hi Ian,
Welcome to my blog!

Thanks for visiting and commenting.
All the best,

Hi Mavis, a new blogger here. Your site is well marked for it’s niche in the URL I only wish I had of learned that technique earlier. I’m hoping the tag line in the description of my site will help overcome that shortfall.
Thanks for this story I decided to go ahead and install CommentLuv and give it a try. It did install seamlessly although the message I always dread came up before installing “This Plug In has not been tested with your version of WordPress”…or some such text like that.
I will run it for a while and come back as soon as I can get someone to my site and comment. I like this function allowing those who comment to leave a link to a post on their site behind. It enables me to share their posts as well.
I had been wondering about different comment systems. I do notice the option to share your comment with social media sites doesn’t appear with CommentLuv but if people want to share the post that’s better in my opinion. Thanks once again Mavis.
Hi Dennis,
Welcome to my blog!
I appreciate your compliment. Having your keywords in your domain name is very important.
Well done for installing CommentLuv. I’m sure you’re going to love it.
It’s also important to upgrade to the latest version of WordPress.
Yes, you don’t get the option to share with social media sites like with Disqus. However, CommentLuv offers great benefits.
Do come back and let us know how you’re getting on.
Thanks for the visit and comment.

Hi Mavis,
Thank you so much for this post. I am trying to use CommentLuv but for some reason I do not seem to get it to work correctly, I know it is me not setting it up right. No fear though, it is on my radar to go and figure it out, I will not let some silly program hold me back. I started using commentluv because honestly I saw that everyone else was using it, so I went in and snatched the pluin for free!
Thank you again for the great post.

Mavis,
For a long time I used disqus and was very happy with the simplicity of it. But I still had an account at comment luv so when I visited a blog with this system I would still have a gravatar etc., etc.
I eventually did move to comment luv for seo purposes and if a commentor wants to display a more relevant post to yours they have that option.
Either way they are both great.

Mavis,
I started using Disqus when I first start my blog. The reason why I changed was because I read and comment on blogs mostly from my Blackberry.
For some reason, the Blackberry internet doesn’t allow me to comment on Disqus. So I didn’t want that stopping anyone to comment on my blog. That is why I changed it.
